Lights at the Homestead - One of the magical places in Cedar City is the Frontier Homestead Museum State Park.  Established in 1973, it houses the collection of horse drawn equipment donated by former Mayor and businessman,  Gronway Parry.

History

Lack of iron was a major concern to pioneers who began settling Utah in 1847. When iron ore was discovered in southern Utah, Mormon leader Brigham Young called for volunteers to colonize the Cedar City area in November of 1851. Ten months later, the colony completed a blast furnace and began to operate an iron foundry. A desire to preserve and interpret the history of this endeavor eventually led to the establishment of the Iron Mission State Park in 1973. The Iron Mission State Park was later renamed as the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in 2009. “Christmas at the Homestead” is one of the favorite events for families each year. It should return in 2021.  However, we did get the lights up for “Lights at the Homestead”, both inside and out.  The atmosphere is wonderful, even if you must wear a mask.

Volunteers

The staff and volunteers (yes, we count on volunteer help) even decorated inside this year.  The old vehicles are covered with little white lights and the park Manager has her Christmas Village on Display. Probably the most unique piece of equipment dressed in Holiday Cheer is outside.  Be sure to visit and see if you can find it.  The Hunter House is dressed in its finest, and although the sheep sheering shack is empty this year, the outside purple lights are lovely.     Speaking of volunteers, do consider talking to Park Manager, Giani Julander, about becoming a volunteer.  Even though the park has some Covid-19 restrictions, they’ll need help taking down all the lights in the New Year.
